It's the highlight of our fundraising calendar, and an event that our community eagerly anticipates. Biannually, students ranging from grades 2 to 5 come together in spirited teams, ready to engage in a delightful showcase of their talents. It revolves around a friendly competition, where students take the stage to perform their heart out, lip-syncing to a song of their choice.
Friends and parents work with each other to form their own teams. There is a sign-up sheet in school where one team member takes the lead to jot down their chosen song and the names of their fellow group members. If you don't know where to begin, try posting on the Atkinson Academy Facebook Group to ask around.
Mr. Goddard announces the sign-up dates at an all-school assembly each year. During those dates, a sign-up sheet will be posted in school. Each team should choose a student representative to add their names & song information.
The sign-up dates for the 2023 Fall show are October 23rd - 26th.
Each team chooses the songs for their act, ideally no more than 3 to 3.5 minutes long, although the official max allowed is 5 minutes. If you have audio editing skills, you can mix up to two songs together. See this page for an outline of the rules & guidelines.
The song of choice is written on the sign-up sheet in school after which it will be reviewed & approved by Mr. Goddard. No two teams can perform the same song.
At least two weeks prior to the event, an audio file or YouTube link of your song must be emailed to Mr. Goddard (jeffrey.goddard@timberlane.net). If necessary, an audio CD can be sent to school instead.
Some teams will edit their own music to change the length, cut out repetitive sections, add effects, etc. If you need help changing the length of your song, you can reach out to info@AtkinsonNightOwls.com.
Students can work by themselves or with their parents to choreograph a lip sync performance. They often include a backdrop & props in their show for extra points. You can check out videos from past years to see some examples.
Sets and props are not required, however teams can earn additional points for incorporating them into their show, provided they are quick & easy to setup and not excessive. See this page for more about the judging criteria & process.
Many teams choose to clip a banner along the back curtain as a backdrop. Some teams also add simple props or decorations to their performance. Check out the highlight & preview videos to see examples from past shows.
Many parents choose to coordinate & host their own weekly rehearsals leading up to the event. Students also enjoy rehearsing together at school during recess.
There are two divisions: second and third graders are in the first division; fourth and fifth graders are in the second division. The top three teams from each division are awarded medals. All performers receive a participation t-shirt. See this page for more about the judging criteria & process.
We hold two shows per year, fall & spring. Check out our Lip Sync information page to see upcoming dates.
Students will take the stage at the Timberlane Performing Arts Center (PAC), part of the Timberlane Regional High School, which boasts a professional stage, state of the art sound & lighting, and 1000 seats full of friends and family.
